H&M Knows Its AI Models Will Be Controversial

The company expects public opinion to be divided on its plan to use “digital twins” of real models in AI-generated imagery. But the best way to protect models’ jobs and rights in the age of AI, it says, is to bring them into the process.

Key insights

  • H&M is working directly with models and their agencies to create digital replicas of 30 different models this year that it will be able to use in AI-generated images for purposes such as social-media posts and marketing campaigns.
  • The models themselves will own the rights to their twins, according to the company, and will even be able to let other brands use them, including H&M’s competitors.
  • The company acknowledges that it doesn’t yet know all the impacts this approach will have on models, or all the other workers who make fashion imagery possible, such as photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists and more.
