Etsy, Inc. announced on Thursday it will ban the sale of all animal fur from its website, effective Aug. 11.
The Coalition to Abolish the Fur trade says the announcement comes after it staged over 50 protests against Etsy and its affiliates across 17 cities over the course of a 58-day campaign — including a staged disruption on March 3 of Etsy CEO Kruti Patel Goyal and CFO Lanny Baker’s live presentation to investors at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.
Etsy joins media groups Condé Nast and Hearst, brands including Rick Owens and events like the Television Academy’s Emmy Awards and New York Fashion Week, which have, in the past year, announced their decisions to renounce animal fur. However, Etsy is unique in that many of the fur products available on the website are secondhand — an area that is seeing a current swell in interest.
CAFT executive director Suzie Stork said that the organisation will next set its sights on anti-fur activities targeting Milan Fashion Week and LVMH.
