Can AI Predict What Shoppers Will Buy?

One of the technology’s great promises is to let retailers make far more accurate forecasts about how much to produce, down to the level of size and colour. But knowing what consumers will want months in advance isn’t so simple.

Key insights

  • Fashion purchases are often driven by emotion, novelty and the strength of the particular product, meaning previous sales, even of similar items, can only tell you so much.
  • What's often left out of conversations about AI is that it's probabilistic, meaning forecasts can have varying levels of confidence and need to be judged accordingly.
  • Proponents of AI say the technology can still be more effective than conventional methods, and that it's best thought of as a way to support experienced merchandisers and creative teams, not replace them.
