Trump’s Tariffs: Beauty’s Winners and Losers

President-elect Donald Trump’s idea to ratchet up tariffs on foreign-made goods could mean a hit to supply chains, margins and overseas sales for beauty brands like E.l.f. Cosmetics and Jolie.

Key insights

  • Incoming US president Donald Trump has signalled his intent to increase tariffs on Chinese-made goods to 60 percent, and floated the possibility of wider tariffs on foreign-made goods from other countries.
  • Many beauty companies rely on China for raw materials and components, while some, like E.l.f Cosmetics, import finished products from China directly. Others import specialised ingredients or packaging from markets such as Europe.
  • Any further tariffs also raise the potential for retaliatory tariffs, brand boycotts and trade wars, as well as pressurising gross margins and price points.
