Takuji Ishihara

President & Representative Director, Komehyo Holdings

The Japanese retail executive has transformed his family’s second-hand shop into a luxury resale powerhouse, using robust authentication to institutionalise consumer trust.

Takuji Ishihara

Takuji Ishihara is president and representative director at Komehyo Holdings, a luxury resale powerhouse built on the foundations of a regional second-hand shop founded by his grandfather.

Launched in 1947, the business began as a 16-square-metre store in Nagoya, Japan. Ishihara joined the business in 1998, progressing through various executive roles across store management, sales promotion, and e-commerce strategy before taking the helm as president in June 2013.

Under his leadership, the company has grown its retail footprint to over 100 points of sale across Japan, mainland China, Taiwan, Thailand, and North America. It’s invested in infrastructure to help build trust and destigmatise luxury re-commerce, establishing a centralised authentication and restoration framework in Aichi Prefecture that pairs AI visual-recognition technology with expert human appraisers.

Between 2025 and 2026, Ishihara cemented Komehyo’s position at the heart of the circular luxury economy by forming trade-in partnerships with major department stores and platforms, operating buyback stores in Daimaru, Matsuzakaya, and Parco locations and developing behind-the-scenes authentication services (Saikyo Kantei) for Rakuten Rakuma. The company reported annual revenues exceeding 200 billion yen ($1.2 billion) in its 2026 financial year, with a long-term target of 310 billion yen.
