Katharine Hamnett

Katharine Hamnett is a British fashion designer as well known for her political T-shirts and her ethical and sustainable business philosophy as she is for creating fashion trends. She launched her brand in 1979; menswear followed in 1981. That same year, she released many of her most famous T-shirts which included slogans like “Choose Life” and “Education Not Missiles.” Her collections defined an aesthetic for the times and attracted fans such as Mick Jagger, Liz Taylor, Princess Diana, Boy George and Madonna; with lines for denim, watches, handbags, shoes and eyewear, Hamnett’s instantly recognisable style reached across the world. After Hamnett’s 1989 research into the environmental and social impact of the clothing and textile industry, she took the decision to gradually wind down her brand until production methods could meet her environmental criteria. She moved out of the mainstream industry to concentrate on campaigning, political activism and collaborating with charities. The label re-launched in 2017.
